Fans of Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ series will be pleased to know how the iconic ‘60s sci-fi novels are being adapted into the big screen once again.
The ‘Dune’ series revolve around the protagonist Paul Atreides and his growth from being a mere heir to the aristocratic House of Atreides to the eventual Emperor of the established universe of the series. Dune takes place in the very distant future where humans have renounced technology in exchange for training their minds instead to be able to complete tasks just as a supercomputer would. At this point, the universe has also returned to the old feudal ways of governing and religion also play a big part in maintaining the order of the people in the Dune universe.
In the first novel, which the movie will be based on, the House of Atreides are announced by the then-emperor to take control of the planet Arrakis which was currently ruled by the Atreides’s arch-nemesis the House Harkonnen. Things immediately turn for the worst after Paul and his family move to the new planet and he, along with his mother, are eventually forced to flee their home. They find refuge with the Fremen, a nomadic tribe, and it is there where Paul, having manifested the supernatural ability to foresee the future, ends up further developing his new talents and learning more about himself. He also ends up falling in love with a Freman named Chani. Although, at the end of the first novel, he does end up marrying the then-emperor’s daughter for political purposes, a recurring theme throughout the entire series is his ever loyal and devoted love for Chani.
In the 2020 movie adaptation to be directed by French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Blade Runner 2049), Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) will be playing the protagonist role of Paul Atreides with Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Greatest Showman) and Oscar Isaac (Star Wars sequel trilogy) set to play his parents Lady Jessica and Duke Leto Atreides respectively. A couple of Marvel folks are also set to star with Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck—Paul’s mentor, Stellan Skarsgård as Duke Leto’s archnemesis Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Dave Bautista as Baron Vladimir’s nephew Glossu Rabban and Zendaya as Paul’s love interest, Chani.
Herbert’s novels have already been seen on the big screen back in 1984 (directed by David Lynch) and was also depicted as a television miniseries which aired on the Sci Fi channel back in 2000.
‘Dune’ is set to be released on November 20th, 2020 in the United States in both IMAX and 3D.
