Today, I bear you all with the news of another beloved couple separating this 2019.

Former “Descendants of the Sun” actors Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo have officially announced having filed for divorce. It was filed just yesterday, June 26th, at the Seoul Family Court.

Included in the official press release from Song Joong-ki’s attorney is a statement from the actor which is as follows (translated in English):

“Hello. This is Song Joong Ki.

I’m sorry to announce this unfortunate news to many fans who love and care for me. I have already proceeded with the divorce proceedings with Song Hye Kyo.

Instead of criticizing each other, I hope the divorce process can be settled amicably. I ask for your understanding that it is difficult to tell you about my personal life, and I will recover from this current wound and do my best to repay you with good productions in future.

Thank you.”

Meanwhile, Song Hye-kyo’s agency representative has also released an official statement which is as follows (translated in English):

“We find it unfortunate that we are greeting you with unhappy news. After careful consideration, actress Song Hye Kyo and her husband are taking the first steps toward a divorce.

The reason for the divorce is differences in personality, and because the two were unable to overcome their differences, they were forced to come to this decision.

We respectfully ask for your understanding in regards to the fact that we cannot confirm any further details out of respect for the two actors’ personal lives. Additionally, we urge you to refrain from making scandalous posts and speculative comments.”

Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo tied the know back in October 31st, 2017 which was widely anticipated by people all over the world (one could definitely compare it’s media interest as that of a royal wedding). Although, earlier this year, there have already been rumors of the couple’s impending separation as the actress had been appearing in public without her wedding ring.

The now-former couple rose to international Hallyu fame after lead starring in the KBS2 television series “Descendants of the Sun (태양의 후예)” which aired in 2016. The series follows South Korean Special Forces Captain Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki) and Dr. Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo) as the two begin a relationship amidst ongoing border wars and medical crises in the fictional country of Uruk. It was a hit, both domestically and internationally, as it managed to take in approximately ₩13 Billion in just its first episode alone and has resulted in the over-all rise of South Korea’s economy at about ₩1 Tillion. The show’s tourism impact was also immense with the constant flow of both local and foreign tourists visiting the show’s filming sites located all around South Korea (some of which have been turned into official tourist spots by the government). Additionally, it has been broadcasted and translated in a total of 32 countries/languages.

A sequel, to be set in Greece, has been said to be in the works back in 2017. Although given this breaking news, we may all have to face the truth that our SongSong couple will now only, forever and always, remain frozen in the world of the first DOTS. And that’s that.

Nonetheless, we wish the two good luck on whatever individual endeavors they end up doing in the near future.
