The long wait for a sequel for the Princess Diaries films isn’t going to be put into waste!
It has been 14 years since the Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement came out, but that won’t crush the fans’ hope for a sequel, and now it is happening! Recently in an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Anne Hathaway revealed that a Princess Diaries 3 is on the way, and already has a script.
The film may include Julie Andrews, now 83, who played Hathaway’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi. Both she and Anne wanted the film to happen, so they’re both working on it. In fact, everyone is working on it, except no one is willing to hit the go signal until everything is perfect.
“We all really want it to happen,” Hathaway said. “It’s just we don’t want to release it unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.” Hathaway added.
The original film featured Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, an awkward teenager in San Francisco who founds out that she’s the heir to the Genovian throne after her father dies. The sequel introduced Chris Pine to the series as Mia’s love interest, while also focusing on the transition of Princess Mia to becoming a Queen of Genovia.
The director of the first two films, Gary Marshall, said in an interview with People in March 2016 that he plans on making the third installment of the film in Manhattan. “I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago. It looks like we want to do The Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan.” the director said.
Sadly, Marshall’s plans never came into a reality when he died on July 2016. However, there are rumors that the sequel could possibly happen in New York to honor his idea.
There are still no official announcements about the film yet, but that gives all of us plenty of time to rewatch the first two movies and remember how royal the cast were in the films.
