After much expectation for Lady Gaga to bag the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Glenn Close takes home the award for her role Joan Castleman in The Wife for this year’s annual awards. This is her 15th Golden Globe nomination and her third win in the span of her 45-year old career.

Although Lady Gaga’s fans have strong feelings about her not winning, she showed no heat on losing the award and even congratulated Glenn Close in her tweet. In the same tweet, she also exclaimed her happiness after winning Best Original Song – Motion Picture for Shallow with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt.

In her acceptance speech, Close spoke about her mother and recalled how her life was sublimated to her father. She continued to bring tears to the audience when she encouraged women to follow their dreams and to “find personal fulfillment.”

She continued:

“To play a character is so internal. And I’m thinking of my mom who really sublimated herself to my father her whole life and in her 80s she said to me, “I feel I haven’t accomplished anything.” And it was so not right and I feel what I’ve learned through this whole experience is that, you know, women, we are nurturers, that’s what’s expected of us. We have our children. We have our husbands if we are lucky enough, and our partners, whoever. But we have to find personal fulfillment. We have to follow our dreams. We have to say, “I can do that and I should be allowed to do that.”

“And, you know, when I was little, I felt like Muhammad Ali, who was destined to be a boxer. I felt destined to be an actress. I saw all the early Disney films and Hayley Mills, and I said, “I can do that.” And here I am today. It will have been 45 years in September that I am a working actress. And I cannot imagine a more wonderful life. Thank you Björn Runge, who is here, who directed “The Wife,” who trusted the close-up, who knew where to put the camera and how to light us. Jonathan Pryce, what a great partner. My daughter Annie who played the foundation of this character. I love you, my darling. Thank you so much.”
