Jean-Luc Picard (played by Sir Patrick Stewart) was one of the greatest captains in the history of Starfleet. At one point in his career, he led an entire armada of starships for a rescue mission, but retired soon after to the Picard family vineyard. He hasn’t seen the last of Starfleet though as CBS All Access’ new Star Trek: Picard is set to delve into the character’s journey back to the stars alongside some new and familiar faces.

The show’s official teaser trailer was unveiled at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, just ahead of its 2020 release on CBS All Access (US), Space (Canada), and Amazon Prime Video (International). While the team behind the show admit that it is not set up to be either a remake or sequel for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Picard is set nearly two decades into the future of the universe. It builds on the impact of some key events in Star Trek canon, such as the death of Commander Data and the destruction of Romulus.
Aside from Stewart returning to don the Starfleet pin once more, Brent Spiner (Data) and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) also appeared in the trailer and will be returning to the Star Trek universe. Though unseen in the trailer, Jonathan del Arco (Hugh), Jonathan Frakes (Commander Will Riker), and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) will be reprising their roles as well.
While not much is known about the newer characters, Stewart has confirmed that the new cast is not a next generation Enterprise crew but rather a motley crew of misfits. Santiago Cabrera plays ex-Starfleet pilot Cristobal “Chris” Rios. He is joined by Michelle Hurd (Raffi Musiker), Alison Pill (Dr. Agnes Jurati), Evan Evagora (Elnor), and Harry Treadway (Narek). Rounding out the newcomers is Isa Briones, who stands out in the trailer as Dahj, a young woman who has sought out Picard for his help.
With a few months left before the series’ release, Trek fans have just enough time to relive the good old days and binge watch past seasons of Star Trek.
